Pre-Trip Motorhome Checklist

Pre-Trip Motorhome Checklist Image

Before you set off on your next motorhome adventure, it’s important to make sure everything is ready. Doing a few quick checks can help keep you safe, avoid problems on the road, and make your journey smoother.

Check Your Tyres

Your tyres help your motorhome grip the road, especially in bad weather. Look at each tyre to see if it’s flat, damaged or worn out.

Use a pressure gauge to check the air pressure. You can find the right pressure in your motorhome manual. Don’t forget the spare tyre too.

Inspect the Brakes

Brakes are one of the most important safety parts of your motorhome.

Before you leave, press the brake pedal a few times. It should feel firm, not soft or spongy. If you hear any strange sounds when you stop, like squeaking or grinding, have them checked by a mechanic.

Test All Lights

Make sure all your lights are working, including headlights, brake lights, indicators, and reverse lights. Ask someone to stand outside while you press the pedals and flip the switches.

Lights help other drivers see you, and they also let you signal when you're turning or stopping.

Motorhome Trip

Check Oil and Fluid Levels

Your motorhome has fluids that help it run properly, like engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and screen wash.

Lift the bonnet and check the levels using the dipsticks and caps. If anything is low, top it up before you drive off. Always follow the guide in your owner’s manual.

Secure Doors, Windows and Rooflights

It’s easy to forget a window or cupboard, but a loose door can swing open while you’re driving.

Walk through the motorhome and make sure every door, window and rooflight is shut and locked. Check cupboards, drawers and the fridge too so nothing falls out on the move.

Check Your Documents

Before you set off, make sure you have all the right paperwork with you. This includes your driving licence, insurance, motorhome registration (V5C), and breakdown cover.

If you’re travelling abroad, you might need extra documents like a passport or green card. Keeping these in a folder near the driver’s seat is a good idea.

Top Up the Fuel and Water Tanks

Running low on fuel or fresh water can spoil your trip. Before you leave, make sure the fuel tank is filled up, especially if you're heading somewhere remote.

Also check your fresh water tank and top it up if needed. If you use a water filter, make sure it’s clean and working properly.

Check the Gas Supply

Gas is needed for cooking, heating and running your fridge. Make sure your gas bottle has enough left in it for your journey.

Turn on the hob to test it briefly, then turn it off again. Check that the bottle is connected properly and not leaking. If you smell gas, get it checked right away.

Pack Safety Equipment

It’s always best to be ready for emergencies. Pack a first aid kit, warning triangle, torch, spare bulbs and a fire extinguisher.

If you're driving abroad, check what safety gear is required in each country. These simple items can help you deal with unexpected problems on the road.
